Ahead of his presentation at this year's Phosphor Global Summit and Quantum Dots Forum, Michael Wisser of Soraa Inc, shared his views on advancements in lighting technology, innovative opportunities, and the convergence of quantum dots and conventional phosphor materials.
Your presentation at this year’s conference will cover wide-gamut displays without blue radiation. Why is it important for others in your industry to hear this message?
What are some of the key takeaways?
Circadian-friendly lighting is becoming increasingly popular as technology advances and as knowledge of the disruptive effects of blue light becomes more widespread. My presentation will discuss these effects and, more importantly, describe how they can be mitigated in white light independent of CCT. Finally, I will show experimental data demonstrating an emitter capable of achieving greater than 90% coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut without any blue radiation. Essentially, I’ll show that we can make blue pixels without any blue light, a transformative innovation which could enable circadian-friendly televisions, phones, and monitors.

The Phosphor Global Summit offers a unique opportunity for professionals in the field to discuss their latest innovations with the people that share their passion and expertise. As such, I’ve decided to present Soraa’s recent research efforts because I feel that those in attendance will be able to provide feedback and perspective that can’t be found anywhere else.
What are some of the most interesting and/or innovative solutions that are impacting your work at this time?
Wide-gamut displays require luminescent materials of exceptional color purity. The latest advancements in the narrow green phosphor β-SiAlON have enabled brighter, more efficient, and wider-gamut displays without sacrificing reliability.
What innovations do you hope to see within the phosphor industry over the next few years?
Everyone knows LED lighting offers massive efficiency advancements compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, but the industry has yet to really embrace the other capabilities endemic to LEDs. The abilities to decouple light intensity and CCT, to tailor emission spectra to a given application, and to dynamically change color, to name a few, are only just gaining notoriety outside the industry. Basically, I’d like to see LED lighting embrace and fully leverage its differences from incandescents.
How is Soraa Inc working toward those innovations?
Soraa is at the forefront of exploring and incorporating the options available with solid-state lights, particularly in the violet portion of the spectrum. For example, violet light enables the creation of white light, at any CCT, without blue radiation, providing an excellent foundation for human-centric lighting and emitters. Additionally, violet light is known to exhibit bactericidal properties, a property Soraa is working to leverage in future products intended to be used in hospitals, daycares, and other sectors where bacteria are most problematic.
How does the Phosphor Global Summit help to combat challenges facing the phosphor industry?
The Phosphor Global Summit provides a forum for phosphor scientists and engineers to gain perspective from individuals and companies outside their own. It fosters dialogs which lead to new ideas, developments, and, ultimately, new products.
From your own experience, why should others working in the industry attend the Phosphor Global Summit?
The Phosphor Global Summit is the premier conference in the industry and undoubtedly the best place to learn about the latest phosphor developments and to meet and speak with the people spearheading these developments. For professionals working in lighting, displays, or any tangential field, it is an invaluable opportunity to exchange ideas and gain new insight.
Along those same lines, how does co-locating the Phosphor Global Summit and the Quantum Dots Forum add value for attendees?
As the technology matures, quantum dots are receiving greater and greater attention from the lighting and display sectors. Not only can quantum dot manufacturers interface with the companies looking to incorporate the technology in their products, but they can also interact with and learn from phosphor vendors who have experienced the process of taking an experimental material to successful commercialization.
Why should attendees be excited about the updated format and joint sessions at this year's conference?
As the cost and reliability of quantum dots technology approaches levels similar to conventional phosphor materials, the two topics begin to converge. Lighting and display companies alike are heavily invested in advancements in conventional as well as unconventional phosphors (including quantum dots - as well as others). In this year’s format, attendees will be able to see everything they want with a single conference pass!
